Gaelic Song Classes Anam Cara

Next session coming in May

I was first introduced to the songs and stories of Gaelic Scotland as a young person in Montreal, Nova Scotia and the Isle of Skye.

Since that time, it has been a joy and an honour to share these treasures with others.

Thanks to the support and encouragement of good friends, I began teaching Gaelic songs online in 2018.

The primary focus of these workshops is song but I also intersperse stories and Highland traditions, in order to give the participants a context for these cultural treasures.

Lyrics and pronunciation are provided from our song archive, as well as audio recordings.

There is a major focus on songs of loss and longing, sprinkled with traditional work songs, sung to accompany tasks such as fulling, spinning, weaving and milking; tasks that were performed in the days before mechanization.

Song Workshops take place on Zoom, at 1pm EST, on consecutive Sundays.

Private classes follow a different format. They can be tailor made to suit the student.

“Sine McKenna is a Gaelic song teacher who brings her heart, soul, and spirit to her classes so her students learn so much more than Gaelic songs. We are changed and deepened as we learn about our ancestral culture through music, historical traditions, authors, and texts such as the Carmina Gadelica. Sine’s lifetime of studying and singing Gaelic songs of Scotland and the diaspora have made her a valuable knowledge keeper who generously shares what she knows, and with such heart.”

– Deirdre Howie

“Working with Sìne has been the best thing to happen in my life. She is a wonderful teacher who has gifted me with friendship, kindness, and wise mentorship. Her singing classes have helped me nurture a grounded spiritual connection with my ancestors. Through her, I have learned so much about myself, my family, and my Gaelic lineage (language, song, culture). Her lessons are unique and deeply profound. I am so proud to be her student, and I hope more people will join us in this work.”
